Postgraduate Certificate

Becoming a mentor

“Being a mentor is of benefit in my own work and personal development in encouraging me to reflect on my own practices as I encourage and support my mentee.”

Sue Beech, Warwick Business School

Becoming a mentor

There are now over 160 mentors from almost 100 different institutions registered on the AUA mentoring scheme. Their role is to support over 190 participants on the AUA Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice as they plan and execute professional development activities and complete the various components of the programme.

Mentors derive real benefits from the programme. Many find it an extremely rewarding experience: playing an active role in a colleague’s professional development is exciting, and, at the same time, they are giving something back to the sector. It is also an opportunity to develop and practice skills which can be applied in other professional contexts. Initial training and voluntary development events are provided free of charge, and skills like listening and questioning, which are central to mentoring, are also an essential part of any manager’s toolkit.

We recruit participants and mentors throughout the year, and the mentoring scheme is open to all those who work in higher education administration and management.

If you are interested in finding out more about the mentoring scheme, you will find further information here. It is in the form of questions and answers and has been put together by an experienced mentor.

The dates of mentor training events, the application form, and information about applying are available here
