Annual Lecture 2 November 2010
This year we are delighted to be addressed by Professor Lord Winston, broadcaster, internationally acclaimed scientist, and educationalist.
In a recent BBC radio interview Professor Lord Winston stated that universities are a hugely civilising force that really make people's lives better, and continued by asserting that "without a healthy university system you can't advance the well-being of your society". Such statements stimulate the perennial debate about the purpose and role of higher education, and should lead us to challenge ourselves about the contribution we make personally and professionally to the sector. The acceptance and realisation that we are part of something which has the potential to transform lives is powerfully motivating to those of us who dedicate our professional lives to higher education. As Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, Chair of the Royal College of Music, Council member at Surrey University and Professor at Imperial College, this speaker is uniquely well qualified to share with us his reflections about higher education and our part in it.
