Branch Good Practice Awards - 2009 winners

Branch Good Practice Awards were launched in 2004 as a way of reconising branches for their achievements in raising the profile of the AUA. This year's winners were;

Teresa Stephens and Patricia Hughes from the University of the West of England

Carol Hughes from the University of Salford

Jan Hanley from Bath Spa University

The University of the West of England won due to a strong application which highlighted how the branch is fostering the professionalism of administration. The University of Salford demonstrated strengths particularly in the levels of membership and involvement of members at national events like the Conference. The application from Bath Spa University showed encouraging potential for the future of the branch; this branch has undertaken a great deal of rejuvenating work within the past year which has lead to increased activity in the local, regional and national branches of AUA.

The ongoing success of the AUA is very much premised upon the work undertaken within the branches and the regions.  We are aware of the considerable good work undertaken within the branches that make up the AUA and ask Branch Co-ordinators to begin to think now about making an application for Good Practice Awards in 2010.  We look forward to being able to celebrate the good work of our branches and make more Good Practice Awards at the Annual Conference in Warwick in 2010.

2010 Branch Good Practice Awards

Applications are invited for the AUA Branch Good Practice Awards 2010.

Entries are welcome from all branches of AUA. Branches who have entered in previous years are welcome to enter again, although they will be expected to submit an entry which is substantially different to their previous entry.

Entries will take the form of a brief synopsis of no more than 500 words, demonstrating the ways in which a branch team has contributed to raising the profile of AUA. They should be based on an activity or programme of activities which have, for example:

  • raised awareness of AUA and its mission to non-members
  • promoted specific AUA activities to members and/or non-members (e.g. Annual Conference)
  • Reinforced the advantages of membership to current members
  • furthered the aims of AUA in fostering professionalism and excellence in the sector

Examples of such activities include:

  • organising and/or hosting a programme of local events
  • increasing awareness of AUA within an institution (e.g. presence at staff development festivals, invitations to new staff)
  • the introduction of a membership recruitment strategy
  • the introduction of a membership retention strategy
  • raising branch profile by advertising events to current/prospective members (e.g. placing on the AUA website, producing newsletter for Branch members)

Entries should have regard for the tangible effects of such activities; for example:

  • increased numbers of new members (even in the absence of an overall increase in numbers)
  • improved attendance at local and/or national events
  • new recruitment of mentors and participants for the PG Cert

Entries may also demonstrate:

  • how a branch has actively worked/communicated with other AUA branches to increase regional activity
  • how good practice and expertise has been shared and made available to other Branch and Regional Co-ordinators, through the AUA’s Branch Blog
  • the increased involvement of members in all aspects of AUA activity: e.g. branch/regional event organisation

Entries will be assessed by a panel composed of members of the regional coordinators steering group and executive committee members. The winners of the 2009 awards will be announced at the AGM during the AUA Annual Conference in Exeter on 6 April 2009.

The closing date for entries is Friday 12 February 2010
